On October 30, Russia launched missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, damaging electrical substations critical for nuclear safety. Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, stated that "the IAEA was informed about military activities in Ukraine that resulted in damage to critical substations for nuclear safety. The IAEA teams at the South Ukraine and Khmelnytsky nuclear power plants reported that each lost one external power supply line".
Additionally, the team at the Rivne NPP reported that, at the request of the energy system operator, the power output of two of its four reactors was reduced.
"The threats to nuclear safety remain very real and persistent. I again urge maximum military restraint near nuclear facilities and full respect for the seven indispensable principles of nuclear safety and protection," Grossi stated.
The IAEA also reported ongoing efforts to repair the damaged 330 kV line "Ferosplavna-1" at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, where additional damages have been identified.
"During the repair work aimed at restoring external power supply to the station after a month without it, the IAEA confirmed the discovery of further damages to the reserve line 'Ferosplavna-1', located approximately 1.8 km from the Zaporizhzhia TPP substation," the statement said.
According to Grossi, restoring this line is "key to improving the fragile nuclear safety situation at the station".
