The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, along with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has proposed establishing a ceasefire in Ukraine for a duration of one month. President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged awareness of this initiative.
Source: Macron stated this in an interview with Le Figaro, as reported by Le Parisien, while Zelensky commented to reporters before departing from the UK, according to BBC.
Details: Following the summit of leaders regarding Ukraine in London, Macron revealed that he and Starmer propose a "ceasefire in airspace, at sea, and in energy infrastructure" lasting for one month.
"You must keep in mind that the front line today is equivalent to the Paris-Budapest line. In the event of a ceasefire, it will be incredibly challenging to verify compliance with this front line," he expressed.
Macron also mentioned that the ceasefire would be the first step, with the deployment of ground troops to ensure peace occurring later.
Macron's statement: "In the coming weeks, there will be no European troops on Ukrainian soil. The question is how we will use this time to attempt to achieve a feasible ceasefire, with negotiations lasting several weeks, and then, after signing the peace agreement, deployment."
Details: Macron also believes that Europeans need to increase their defense budgets.
"Over the past three years, the Russians have spent 10% of their GDP on defense. Therefore, we must prepare for the future, aiming for about 3% or 3.5% of GDP," he stated.
Le Parisien notes that France currently allocates 2% of its resources to defense, significantly outpacing its European neighbors.
At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed to reporters before leaving the UK that he is aware of Macron and Starmer's initiative.
When asked if he knows about this plan, Zelensky replied: "I know everything."
