Ukrainian track and field star Yaroslava Mahuchikh shared her feelings following her remarkable performance at the Diamond League event in Paris, where she set a new world record. She revealed that the chance to bring joy to people in Ukraine was her motivation.
She spoke about this in a comment for the Diamond League press service.
"Before my jump, I was in a state of doubt, but when the crowd started to cheer, the atmosphere in the stadium was electrifying.
I thought about how much joy it would bring to Ukraine if I succeeded in breaking the record. I was aware of the many tough news stories coming from home, and I hoped that my success could symbolize hope for our people."
"Many said no woman could jump higher than 2.09 m, but I have proven them wrong."
"When I jumped, it took time for me to realize what I had achieved. It was only in October, when I returned to Ukraine and was nominated for the "Athlete of the Year" award, that I understood how incredible this year had been for me."
For the record, Yaroslava Mahuchikh set a new world record in high jump at the Diamond League in Paris, which took place in mid-July last year.
The athlete also announced her return to official competitions.
She commented on her preparation for the first stage of the Diamond League.
