The European Team Chess Championship in Batumi, Georgia, has concluded with outstanding results for the Ukrainian team. The men's team clinched the gold medal, while the women's team secured a prestigious second place. According to the Ukrainian Chess Federation, Ukrainian players also earned several individual awards.
Anna Ushenina was recognized as the best female player on the second board.
In the men's category, gold medals were awarded to Igor Kovalenko (fourth board) and Igor Samunenko (fifth board).
Second places on the fourth and fifth boards were claimed by Ukrainian female players Natalia Zhukova and Bozhena Pidubna. It is noteworthy that both Samunenko and Pidubna are only 16 years old.
This success marks a repeat of the best results for Ukrainian teams at European Championships. In 1992, the women became champions, while the men took silver. In 2021, the men's team won gold for the first time. In 2009 and 2017, the men achieved third place. The women's team has been crowned champions twice – in 1992 and 2013, and in 2015 they won silver. In 2009 and 2017, the girls also finished as bronze medalists.
