World Games 2025: Anticipating the Competition

Learn about the World Games 2025, where the best athletes from around the globe will compete in 34 non-Olympic sports.

Over the next ten days, the top athletes from around the world will compete in 34 sports.

Today, August 7th, the World Games 2025 kick off in Chengdu, China — prestigious international competitions in non-Olympic sports. For the next ten days, the strongest athletes on the planet will compete across 34 different disciplines.

The Ukrainian national team comprises 108 athletes representing 21 sports. Among them are 30 athletes from the capital city who will participate in 12 disciplines, as reported by the Department of Youth and Sports of Kyiv City State Administration.

The Kyiv athletes include world and European champions as well as newcomers. They will compete in the following sports:

  • Sport Acrobatics: Yevfrosiniya Kryvytska, Ivan Labunets, Ivan Horlach, Sofroniy Davidenko
  • Muay Thai: Anastasia Mykhailenko
  • Squash: Dmytro Shcherbakov, Alina Bushma
  • Trampoline: Andriy Sokolov
  • Water Skiing: Volodymyr Chuba, Sofia Sokolova
  • Sambo: Oleksandr Voropaiev
  • Underwater Sports: Anastasia Makarenko, Sofia Lamakh, Anna Yakovleva, Elizaveta Grechikhina, Sofia Grechko, Yevheniya Tymoshenko, Oleksiy Zakharov, Serhiy Smishchenko, Oleksandr Kuzmenko, David Yeliseev
  • WAKO Kickboxing: Daryna Ivanova
  • Powerlifting: Larysa Solovyeva
  • Dragon Boat Racing: Yuriy Bardashevsky, Snizhana Zhigailo, Oleksandr Kalmyus, Kateryna Petrenko
  • Breaking: Oleg Kuznetsov
  • Canoeing and Kayaking: Maksym Redko

“The World Games are an opportunity to showcase oneself on the international stage, demonstrating the will to win, spirit, and skill in sports that are not part of the Olympic program,” the Department states.

The World Games are international multi-sport competitions held for non-Olympic sports. They have been conducted since 1981 every four years and have been under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 2001.

From August 7 to 18, the competitions will bring together around 3,500 participants from over 100 countries, featuring 34 sports and 60 disciplines. A total of 256 sets of medals will be contested during the tournament.

In 2022, at the Birmingham (USA) event, our national team earned 45 medals, including 16 gold, finishing third overall. Throughout the history of these competitions, Ukrainians have won 128 medals: 58 of the highest quality, 59 silver, and 54 bronze. Ukraine holds ninth place in the historical medal rankings.
