The renowned French filmmaker and Oscar winner, Michel Hazanavicius, has released his latest book, “Ukrainian Diaries”.

Unveiling new Ukrainian realities through Hazanavicius' book

This publication is a culmination of his travels in Ukraine throughout 2023, featuring compelling stories of Ukrainian heroes – both soldiers and civilians – who are fighting for their freedom every day. All proceeds from the book sales will be donated to Ukraine via the UNITED24 platform.

The book is written in French and includes original illustrations. “Ukrainian Diaries” portrays individuals such as students, artists, and entrepreneurs who have taken up arms for the future of their nation.

What does “Ukrainian Diaries” reveal?

Through sketches and short vignettes, the director sought to convey the humanity and resilience of those caught in the midst of the fight for freedom. During his travels in Ukraine, Hazanavicius met numerous war heroes, including actor Vasyl Kukhar, who suffered severe injuries at the front and later died, as well as singer Kolya Serga, who helped guide the director through the realities of Donbas.

The idea for the book emerged after Hazanavicius met the severely wounded Kukhar.

“Most of those I encountered were ordinary people who never imagined they would find themselves in a war. I do not know who among them is still alive, but I know we owe them a lot,” states Hazanavicius.

The director intentionally chose the format of a personal diary and drawings to avoid breaking the trust of his subjects and to refrain from imposing the presence of a camera during their most vulnerable moments.

As of the end of April 2025, 9000 copies of the book have been sold. All proceeds from sales are directed to support UNITED24.
