Beginning in September 2026, schools in Vienna will incorporate the Ukrainian language into their official curriculum as a second foreign language. This was announced by the Ukrainian embassy in Austria on Facebook.
Initially, the Ukrainian language will be taught to students in the 5th grade of secondary schools (Oberstufe), corresponding to the 9th year of education.
Two schools in Vienna have already been identified for this initiative: BORG 3 (Landstraßer Hauptstraße 70) and GRG 15 (Diefenbachgasse 19).
“This is a significant step for maintaining the Ukrainian language, culture, and identity,” emphasized the diplomatic mission.
A key requirement for the actual launch of language courses in these schools is a sufficient number of student applications. Diplomats urged the Ukrainian community in Vienna to actively engage with this initiative and submit the necessary applications when choosing subjects for the upcoming academic year.
As a reminder, ten schools and educational centers from various cities in Denmark and Stockholm have joined the overseas teacher mentoring program “Roots and Wings: A Story that Unites,” supported by the Pylyp Orlyk Foundation.
