German defense companies Rheinmetall and MBDA have announced plans to establish a joint venture focused on the development of laser weapon technology. This information was reported by Hartpunkt.

"We are poised to offer the German Navy a technologically advanced laser weapon system that is ready for deployment," said Roman Kone, head of Rheinmetall's armaments and munitions division.

The new company is expected to be established in the first quarter of 2026, focusing on creating laser systems for naval vessels as a complement to traditional guns and missiles.

The companies emphasize that the laser weapon is primarily designed to neutralize drones and other fast aerial targets at short ranges.

Previously, Rheinmetall and MBDA tested their laser system aboard a German Navy frigate, where it successfully demonstrated its capability to accurately hit targets with minimal risk of collateral damage.

Following maritime trials, the laser installation was moved to land for further testing, particularly in counter-drone operations.

Additionally, Israel recently received its first air defense laser system, Iron Beam, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. This system has proven effective against various threats, successfully intercepting rockets, mortars, and drones.
