The Turkish joint-stock company ASFAT and the Romanian Ministry of Defense have signed a contract for the export of a light corvette built in Turkey.
This was announced during a press briefing by the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
“A contract for the export of one light corvette has been signed between our joint-stock company ASFAT and the Ministry of Defense of Romania, a NATO and EU member,” emphasized the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
The Directorate of Defense Industry noted the significance of this contract as the first export of a military vessel from Turkey to a NATO and EU member country.
“The first export of a military ship by ASFAT from Turkey to a NATO and EU member is a significant milestone for our defense industry. This success showcases the level Turkey has achieved in naval platforms and the trust that friendly and allied nations have in our country,” stated Haluk Görgün, head of the Turkish Directorate of Defense Industry.
According to Turkish media reports, the contract is worth 223 million euros. It involves the export of the light corvette TCG Akhisar, which was completed in 2024 at a shipyard in Istanbul.
Turkey is also building two corvettes for the Ukrainian Navy. The first, “Hetman Ivan Mazepa,” was launched in October 2022. The second, “Hetman Ivan Vyhovsky,” will conduct its maiden voyage in 2026, with the delivery of the military vessel to Ukraine scheduled for the first quarter of 2027.
