The United Kingdom is adopting innovative technologies to combat fraudsters who call from fake numbers. This has been reported by the Financial Times.
Mobile operators such as BT EE, VodafoneThree, and Virgin Media O2 have pledged to upgrade their networks within a year to block "number spoofing". Artificial intelligence will be utilized to identify and block suspicious calls and messages.
Additionally, operators are committed to enhancing data sharing by implementing advanced call tracking technology in mobile networks, allowing the police to gather more information for tracking down criminals.
Spoofing enables fraudsters in overseas call centers to create the illusion that they are calling from UK numbers, resembling those used by banks and law enforcement.
Such numbers instill greater trust in potential victims, making them more susceptible to fraud. Research indicates that 96% of individuals decide whether to answer a call based on the displayed number, while the likelihood of answering an international number is significantly lower.
