On Monday morning, September 22, the UN Security Council will convene an emergency session in response to the blatant violation of Estonia's airspace by Russian fighter jets last Friday.
This was announced by the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“On September 22 at 10:00 AM New York time, the UN Security Council will hold an urgent meeting in response to Russia's flagrant breach of Estonia's airspace last Friday. This is the first time in 34 years of Estonia's membership in the UN that the country has officially requested the convening of an emergency Security Council meeting,” the ministry stated.
According to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, on September 19, three armed Russian fighter jets entered Estonia's airspace for 12 minutes, thereby violating the territorial integrity of the country and the UN Charter's principle that prohibits the threat or use of force.
“Such a blatant violation of our airspace undermines the principles essential for the security of all UN members, and therefore it is important that such violations by a permanent member of the Security Council be discussed within this body,” the minister added.
The Foreign Minister noted that Russia's behavior is incompatible with the obligations of a permanent member of the UN Security Council. “Such actions would be unacceptable from any UN member state,” he concluded.
