A new energy storage system has been launched in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, capable of supplying electricity to 600,000 homes for a duration of two hours.

This was reported by the Ministry of Energy.

"Ukraine has activated its largest energy storage system with a capacity of 200 MW, built by DTEK in partnership with the American company Fluence Energy B.V. The system comprises six facilities in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, constructed in a record time of just one year. The investment in the project amounted to 125 million euros," the report stated.

The system has the capacity to store 400 MWh of electricity, enough to meet the needs of 600,000 homes for two hours.

"These new capacities enhance the reliability and flexibility of the system, reduce the risks of emergency shutdowns, and allow for better preparation for the winter season. It also opens up new opportunities for the development of renewable energy and the decentralization of the energy system," commented Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk.

Thus, energy storage systems provide Ukraine with additional capabilities for balancing the energy system and frequency regulation, which is particularly important given the increasing share of renewable sources and ongoing wartime challenges.

From October 7, 2025, the Market Operator will begin testing a platform that will assess the economic viability of energy storage installations across different segments of the energy market. According to forecasts by NEC Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian energy system will require 1.5 GW of energy storage systems over the next ten years.
