This Tuesday, the US administration announced the launch of an official TikTok account, coinciding with a looming deadline for the Chinese company ByteDance to exit the American market.
According to dpa, the first video shared on the White House account featured highlights from President Donald Trump's speeches, where he stated: “I am your voice.”
ByteDance, based in China, faces criticism in the US due to concerns that user data could fall into the hands of the Chinese government.
Critics highlight TikTok's algorithm, which determines which videos users see, as a primary source of concern. They warn that this algorithm could be exploited to manipulate public opinion in the US, a claim that TikTok and ByteDance have consistently denied.
As reported by Ukrinform, on June 19, Donald Trump again extended the deadline and signed an order allowing for the postponement of the sale of TikTok's US operations by ByteDance.
The legislation signed by President Joe Biden last year mandated the shutdown of TikTok by January 19 if ByteDance did not sell its US assets or make significant progress in negotiations. Upon taking office on January 20, Trump opted not to enforce the ban, first extending the deadline to early April and then to June 19.
