A new initiative has launched in Ukraine – a mobile library called “Buksin”, traveling across the country to provide literature to communities, especially those affected by the war.
This information was shared by “Chytomo”, citing the charity fund “Library Country”, which is implementing the project.
The mobile library hosts a variety of activities for both children and adults, including interactive readings, games, quizzes, and cultural events.
The idea for the mobile library emerged in response to the full-scale invasion by Russia, when British librarians from the Libraries Connected association decided to gift a library bus to Ukraine, recognizing the challenges posed by the war.
During a crowdfunding campaign to raise £10,000 for the purchase, outfitting, and transportation of the library bus to Ukraine, 227 British patrons supported this initiative. The bus previously served in the library network of Warwickshire, notably in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.”
The bus is specially equipped for a mobile library:
- it contains bookshelves inside;
- a workspace for the librarian;
- a table for readers who wish to work on laptops.
Additionally, the bus features a ramp for wheelchair users or strollers.
Upon its arrival in Ukraine, the bus underwent rebranding as “Buksin”. The name was chosen intentionally: the bus has become a caterpillar delivering books to readers. The library's collection has also been refreshed – books on health for all ages and various literary works were purchased.
