On July 29, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a new law that enables citizens aged over 60 to join the military on a contractual basis.

The document stipulates that during a state of martial law, with the written consent of the unit commander, individuals over 60 who are deemed fit by a medical commission can be accepted into service. These servicemen may hold non-combat positions, including roles within the ranks of privates, sergeants, or officers. The contract for individuals aged 60 and above is set for one year with the possibility of extension. For officers in this age group, approval from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is required. Contracts for this category will involve a two-month trial period. If the military personnel fails to meet the required standards during this period, the contract will be terminated.

In the event of the cessation or cancellation of martial law, all such contracts will automatically become void.
