A significant forest fire broke out near the Greek city of Corinth on the 22nd, prompting authorities to order the evacuation of residents from several nearby villages.
This was reported by WP.
The local fire service stated that over 180 firefighters, along with 15 aircraft and 12 helicopters, were deployed to combat the forest fire in the pine woods of the mountainous region near Corinth.
Conditions for the firefighters were particularly challenging, with temperatures soaring to around 40°C in many parts of the country.
According to Ekathimerini, local officials reported that by Wednesday morning, the fire had been brought under control, although crews remain on high alert to extinguish flare-ups near the village of Karteri and to prevent any potential re-ignition.
“We had a very tough night, but it seems that the worst is behind us,” said Aнастасіос Гіоліс, the deputy regional governor of Corinthia.
It was also noted that on Tuesday, authorities arrested two men suspected of starting the fire.
According to the arson investigation department, witnesses reported seeing the men conducting welding work near the fire's origin.
Later, the suspects were arrested, and each was fined 11,812 euros.
