Starting at midnight on July 7, Poland has reinstated border control with Germany and Lithuania.
The head of the Polish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Tomasz Semoniak, along with Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, was present at the Polish-German border.
«We are initiating checks at the borders with Germany and Lithuania. I thank the border guards, police, army, and all services for their support,» Semoniak stated on social media X, as reported by Ukrinform.
During a press conference in Swiecko, Semoniak announced that as of midnight, the temporary crossing points at the borders with Germany and Lithuania would be considered critical infrastructure, under special protection by various state services.
He also reminded that all residents of Poland received SMS notifications through the government security center about the introduction of entry control at the Polish borders with Germany and Lithuania.
The temporary border control has been reinstated at 65 points: 52 on the border with Germany and 13 with Lithuania. A total of 800 border guards will be working at these points, supported by 300 police officers, 500 Territorial Defense soldiers, and 200 military gendarmes.
Recently, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that Poland would temporarily reinstate border control with Germany and Lithuania to curb the flow of illegal migrants. He explained that the German side has refused to allow migrants to enter its territory, which has created tension on the Polish side of the border.
Regarding the border with Lithuania, Tusk noted that illegal migrants are arriving in Poland through this route. He pointed out that Warsaw has effectively blocked illegal migration through the Polish-Belarusian border but the influx of migrants continues through Latvia and Lithuania.
In 2022, Poland constructed a barrier 5.5 meters high and 186 km long on the border with Belarus and established a modern electronic monitoring system in response to the artificial migration pressure created by Belarus and Russia since the summer of 2021.
