Pope Calls for Peace in Ukraine

Pope Leo XIV expresses support for Ukraine and calls for a just peace.

On Saturday, June 28, Pope Leo XIV expressed his condolences to Ukraine, particularly to children, youth, and families mourning their losses. President Volodymyr Zelensky responded to his words, urging assistance in the return of Ukrainians held captive by Russia.

In his statement, the Pope mentioned, "I stand with you in this difficult time, sharing your pain for the captives who have become victims of this senseless war".

Zelensky thanked the Pope for his ongoing support and called for joint efforts to stop Russian aggression. "A just peace is our priority, and we would be grateful for your help in bringing our people back from captivity", – he added.

It is worth noting that earlier, Pope Leo XIV had offered to mediate negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, but this initiative did not receive support from Moscow.
