June 6 marks two years since the technological disaster — the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. This incident severely impacted ecology, the energy sector, and the security of southern Ukraine. UHE reports that the recovery will begin immediately after the territory is liberated.
Today we commemorate the second anniversary of the destruction of Kakhovka HPP — a critical infrastructure facility in southern Ukraine. On the night of June 6, 2023, Russian troops detonated the dam, causing a large-scale ecological disaster.
According to acting CEO of UHE Bohdan Sukhetskyi, the company has already prepared a recovery plan for the station, which will be implemented right after de-occupation. The construction of a new hydroelectric power plant according to the highest environmental standards will take about five years, with another two years needed for filling the reservoir.
The explosion of the dam had catastrophic consequences: destruction of water resources, halt of navigation, electricity shortages, and billions in annual losses for the energy system. UHE estimates that losses from unreceived electricity amount to 6-8 billion hryvnias annually.
Sukhetskyi also noted that the international community has not given due attention to the tragedy, which has only intensified Russia's aggression against Ukrainian hydroelectric infrastructure.
Restoration of Kakhovka HPP is not just a technical process. It is a matter of national security, food stability, and the ecological future of southern Ukraine.
Remember that the Security Service of Ukraine has opened a criminal case regarding the explosion of Kakhovka HPP. The investigation is being conducted under two articles of the Criminal Code: Article 438 (violation of the laws and customs of war); Article 441 (ecocide).
