In Lviv, Ukrainian doctors collaborated with British colleagues to perform a remarkable surgery, transplanting a toe to a soldier's hand who suffered severe injuries at the front.
The procedure aimed to restore functionality to his only surviving limb, as reported by the specialized clinic Superhumans Center.
Soldier Nazar sustained grave injuries when an enemy FPV drone crashed into the vehicle he was approaching. This incident resulted in the loss of one arm, two fingers from the other hand, a fractured jaw, and vision loss in one eye.
Amputation of the fingers from his surviving arm posed a serious threat to its functionality since the thumb plays a crucial role in gripping.
To restore this ability, specialists at Superhumans Center transplanted the second toe from his foot onto Nazar's hand.
"The operation lasted several hours: we needed to connect the bones, vessels, nerves, and tendons to ensure that the transplanted finger received proper blood supply, sensitivity, and mobility," the clinic explained.
On the seventh day post-surgery, the soldier began working with specialists to learn how to control the transplanted finger. After a month, doctors noted progress – he was able to unscrew bottle caps and pick up small items.
"There are still several months of rehabilitation ahead, but the chances of fully restoring gripping function are promising," they believe at Superhumans Center.
Nazar expressed a desire to regain the ability to meet his basic needs and hopes to return to service.
