Renowned Ukrainian historian, Professor Serhiy Plokhiy, received the honorary title of doctor from Oxford University.

The awarding ceremony took place on June 25, as reported on the university's official website.

The 67-year-old Serhiy Plokhiy holds the position of director at the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard.

In 2023, he published a book titled The Russo-Ukrainian War: The Return of History, released in the USA and Ukraine. This work made it onto the list of the best publications of the year by The Telegraph.

Also awarded the honorary degree was Timothy Snyder, an American historian and author specializing in East European history, particularly Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. He has been a strong supporter of Ukraine and refers to the Russian regime as fascist. After the onset of the full-scale war, he began teaching a course on Ukrainian history at Yale University.

The ceremony commenced with a grand procession: university representatives and esteemed guests in academic attire walked from Exeter College through Cat Street to the Bodleian Library.

Following this, the honorary laureates signed the Book of Honorary Degrees, which is preserved in the School of Theology. They then proceeded to the Sheldonian Theatre, the venue for the Encaenia ceremony, which has traditionally been held there in various forms since 1670.

“Encaenia is the 'highlight' of the academic year at Oxford, allowing us to celebrate exceptional individuals whose achievements have shaped disciplines, created history, and enriched society.

Today (June 25 – ed.) we honor eight individuals whose work has inspired, informed, and changed the world. This year’s laureates represent an incredibly wide range of fields, and through their vision, creativity, and dedication, they have made significant contributions,” the announcement states.

In addition to Plokhiy and Snyder, diplomas were awarded to:

  • British parliamentarian, broadcaster, and author Lord Melvyn Bragg;
  • British journalist and presenter Clive Myrie;
  • Ireland-born novelist, journalist, scholar, and professor of humanities Colm Tóibín;
  • British athlete, long-distance runner, and presenter Mo Farah;
  • American chemical engineer, nanotechnologist, biologist, scientist, and entrepreneur Robert Langer;
  • German biophysicist Erwin Neher.
