The Ukrainian community gathered with black ribbons on their flags to honor the memory of the victims of recent Russian attacks on Kyiv and to draw attention to the refugee crisis caused by Russia's aggression.

The Illinois branch of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) participated in the observance of World Refugee Day, celebrated on June 20.

The event took place in Chicago on June 17.

The organization reported on the event.

How Ukrainians in Chicago honored the victims of the attacks on Kyiv

“We came with black ribbons on Ukrainian flags – a sign of mourning for the victims of Russian terror last night in Kyiv,” – wrote the UCCA Illinois, explaining their symbolic gesture.

During the event, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson affirmed that Chicago is a welcoming city for all refugees. He particularly mentioned Ukrainians seeking shelter from war and devastation, whose cities are being reduced to ashes due to Russian aggression.

“The crowd, made up of representatives from ethnic communities around the world, applauded in sincere support of the Ukrainian people. Many journalists and all major news channels were present,” – described the reaction of those present in UCCA Illinois.

The community noted that they came to the event to “draw attention to Ukraine and assert that we exist, and that Ukrainians have a voice in Chicago and in American society.”

“We must remind everyone with ears that Russia is a terrorist state, killing and displacing millions of people and provoking a refugee crisis worldwide,” – stressed the activists.

The organization sincerely thanked all participants who joined the commemoration. “Deepest condolences to the families of those killed by Russian terror in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine. We remember that the fight for survival and Ukraine's place in the world continues,” – concluded the organization.
