A 56-year-old man was arrested by law enforcement in Kyiv for attempting to extort money by threatening to share damaging information about the victim's business. Authorities documented the incident, and he faces up to twelve years in prison with asset confiscation.
The suspect, who had no prior acquaintance with the victim, threatened him with death and the public dissemination of negative information about his company on social media. He demanded $30,000, threatening physical harm if the victim refused, stated investigator Maria Martymyanova.
The suspect was apprehended during the documentation of the illegal activity in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He has now been charged with a criminal offense under Part 4 of Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — extortion combined with a death threat, committed during a state of martial law. The court chose to remand him in custody without alternative measures.
