Man Arrested for Bomb Threat in Cherkasy

In Cherkasy, police arrested a man who threatened to detonate a grenade. Details of the operation and its aftermath.

In Cherkasy, law enforcement officers apprehended an individual who threatened to blow up a grenade. The suspect attempted to take military personnel from the TCC hostage. He was armed with a pistol and three grenades. The arrest was made during a special operation conducted by the National Police and the SBU under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

The Cherkasy district police received a report that during notification activities in Cherkasy on Khimikiv Avenue, military personnel from the Cherkasy RTC stopped a person for verification of documents. During the conversation, the man pulled out a grenade, removed the pin, threatened to detonate it, and attempted to take the soldiers hostage. A special police operation was immediately initiated in the city.

An investigative operational group, special forces, forensic specialists, and explosives experts quickly arrived at the scene. Police began negotiations with the man. The 49-year-old resident of Cherkasy was arrested by special forces using special measures. No one was harmed during the incident. 

Thanks to the coordinated actions of the police and the SBU, a potential explosion was averted in the Cherkasy region. The man was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Three grenades with fuses and a pistol were seized from the suspect.

The dangerous munitions were inspected by police explosives experts and handed over to the Cherkasy NDEC of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Currently, police are investigating the origin of the explosives and weapons. 

Investigators from the police and SBU in the Cherkasy region, under the procedural guidance of the Cherkasy District Prosecutor's Office, are considering charges against the detainee under several articles: Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons), Part 1 of Article 350 (threat or violence against a public official), Article 114-1 (obstruction of lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine). 

The suspect faces up to eight years in prison.
