The Security Service of Ukraine successfully conducted an operation resulting in the arrest of a Belarusian intelligence agent involved in espionage activities along the northern border. This action prevented the acquisition of sensitive information regarding Ukrainian defense.
During the operation in the Volyn region, authorities apprehended a 24-year-old local unemployed individual who was seeking easy money by cooperating with Belarusian services. Acting on behalf of the KGB, he monitored Ukrainian military positions, documenting information about checkpoints and fortified areas. The agent also attempted to identify military trains using geolocation data on Google Maps.
SBU officers timely uncovered and documented the agent's criminal activities, apprehending him at his residence. During a search, a phone with an anonymous chat was confiscated, which he had used to communicate with Belarusian operatives. The identity of the agent has already been established. As a result of the special operation, key Ukrainian defense facilities were additionally secured. Based on the collected evidence, he has been charged with treason under martial law. The suspect faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
The operation was carried out by SBU personnel in cooperation with the regional prosecutor's office.
