In Transcarpathia, a soldier of the State Border Guard Service died as a result of a traffic accident at a checkpoint, while the driver, who showed signs of intoxication, was arrested by law enforcement.
On July 7, around 4:30 AM, the police received a report that in the city of Perechyn, a car crashed into a law enforcement checkpoint. There are casualties as a result of the incident.
A response team from the Uzhhorod District Police Department arrived at the scene. Officers conducted initial measures at the site, reviewed footage from surveillance cameras, and established the preliminary circumstances of the accident.
It was determined that a 53-year-old woman driving a "BMW X5" lost control, crossed into oncoming traffic, and collided with the concrete barrier of the checkpoint. A 45-year-old soldier of the State Border Guard Service was taken to hospital, but later died from his injuries.
The driver displayed clear signs of alcohol intoxication but refused to undergo a sobriety test.
The police arrested the driver under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. She is currently in a medical facility under round-the-clock guard, having also sustained injuries in the collision. Additionally, her passenger, a 31-year-old resident of Ivano-Frankivsk region, was hospitalized.
Investigators from the National Police of Ukraine in the Transcarpathian region have opened a criminal proceeding under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for violating traffic safety rules while driving under the influence, resulting in the death of a victim.
The detained individual faces up to 10 years in prison and a driving ban for 5 to 10 years.
