On April 6, the national day of mourning in Ukraine, the Ukrainian community organized a silent performance in front of the Basilica of the Virgin Mary in Valencia to commemorate the children who died due to the Russian terrorist attack in Kryvyi Rih on April 4.
The organizers stated: “This performance became a profound artistic statement and a human cry that cannot be forgotten.”
The event began with a prayer. Father Alvaro, the priest of the Basilica, addressed the people and held a requiem in Spanish, explaining to the attendees, “why we are here – without slogans and banners, only with pain in our hearts.”
During the performance, not only lullabies were played but also real audio recordings of the tragedy in Kryvyi Rih – the voices of parents and children, screams, and warnings of a second missile strike.
The organizers wrote: “This was one of the most painful moments that conveyed the reality of war without embellishments.”
Participants also recited the “Our Father” together, followed by a minute of silence.
The event was initiated by the Ukrainian diaspora in Valencia. The performance was created and executed by Ukrainian volunteer, activist, and director Pavlo Bekizin.
Up to 200 people from Valencia and other cities in Spain (Xàlapa, Sagunto, Denia, Gandia, San Pedro del Pinatar, Cullera) participated, “even from Poland and other European countries.”
Spaniards, friends of Ukrainians, and passersby joined in, listened, returned with toys, hugged, and cried. Tears were everywhere. It was a shared sorrow among nations.”
At the initiative of the clergy, memorial services for each deceased child will be held at the Basilica of the Virgin Mary throughout the following week, every evening by name.
The community expressed gratitude to Valencia: “For your hugs, for your sorrow, for your actions. But the time for compassion has passed. It is time for decisive actions.”
