In 2024, Google blocked over 39 million advertising accounts, three times more than in 2023. This significant increase is attributed to its intensified efforts against ad fraud. The company leveraged artificial intelligence, specifically large language models, to identify suspicious activities such as fake payment information and business impersonation. Most accounts were suspended before any ads were displayed, as reported by TechCrunch.

Google implemented over 50 enhancements based on large language models to fortify the security of its platforms. Additionally, more than 100 experts from various departments, including Ads Safety, Trust and Safety, and DeepMind, were actively involved in the verification process. They particularly focused on combating deepfake advertising, which uses images of public figures. As a result, over 700,000 accounts linked to such ads were blocked, leading to a 90% reduction in complaints.

The highest number of accounts blocked was in the United States — 39.2 million. The main violations included network advertising fraud, trademark abuse, false medical claims, personalized ads, and gambling. In the U.S., Google also removed 1.8 billion ads.

The company paid special attention to election ads — in 2024, it verified over 8,900 new advertisers and removed 10.7 million election-related ads. Overall, Google blocked 5.1 billion ads, removed 1.3 billion pages, and restricted the display of another 9.1 billion ads.

Google acknowledges that such large-scale blocking may raise questions about the fairness of its decisions. Therefore, it introduced more transparent communication with advertisers and an appeal mechanism that includes human review. Google believes that the reduction in harmful ads demonstrates the effectiveness of its new approaches to detecting and blocking violations.
