At the international robotics conference, the Chinese company Kaiwa Technology unveiled its latest project — a humanoid capable of gestating a human fetus until birth. This was reported by Interesting Engineering.
According to the company's founder, Dr. Zhang Cifen, the device will feature an artificial womb located in the humanoid's abdominal cavity, where the fetus will develop in a synthetic amniotic environment. Nutrients will be supplied through a special tube. Developers claim that the technology is already at a 'mature stage,' and the first model of such a robot may be released as early as 2026. The estimated price of the device is $14,000. The company positions the project as an alternative for couples or individuals wishing to avoid biological pregnancy.
However, medical experts criticize the initiative due to a lack of technical details, particularly regarding fertilization, embryo implantation, and the birthing process. Concerns are also raised about the inability to replicate the maternal hormonal environment and the emotional bond with the child. Despite the criticism, some supporters of the idea see it as a potential way to avoid the stress and risks associated with pregnancy. Kaiwa Technology has stated that it is already negotiating with regulatory bodies regarding the legal aspects of the project's implementation.
