The mobile operator "Kyivstar" has successfully conducted tests of its SIM card in partnership with the Starlink satellite network, marking a significant step towards the implementation of Direct to Cell satellite communication technology in Ukraine. This was reported by the company's press service.

The testing took place in a partner laboratory in the USA. During the trial, the "Kyivstar" SIM card was able to connect smoothly with the Starlink network, and the system correctly identified the user and processed signals. This demonstrates the network's readiness for satellite communication integration.

"Kyivstar has become the first company in Europe to sign an agreement with Starlink for the launch of Direct to Cell due to our strategic approach, technological readiness, and the determination of our team. We have been following the development of this technology since 2021. In times of war, when communication is critically important, the company decided to invest in Direct to Cell," — stated Ilya Polishakov, Director of New Business Development at "Kyivstar"

The Direct to Cell technology enables mobile coverage directly from satellites to standard smartphones without the need for specialized equipment. In the future, it will complement Kyivstar's terrestrial infrastructure and allow connectivity even during complete blackouts or in remote areas such as mountains or rural regions.

The next phase will involve field testing of Direct to Cell services in selected locations across Ukraine, which "Kyivstar" plans to start in the summer of 2025. In the initial testing phase, "Kyivstar" specialists will be able to verify text message exchange.

It is worth mentioning that the Direct to Cell service will be available to all "Kyivstar" subscribers who have a smartphone and a SIM card supporting 4G. The company emphasizes that satellite communication will not replace the terrestrial network but will play a crucial role in emergencies.

Recall that "Kyivstar" and Starlink signed an agreement for satellite communication use in Ukraine in December 2024. In March 2025, the NKEC provided "Kyivstar" with the code "707" for satellite mobile communication.
