Ukrainian sumo wrestler Danilo Aonishiki Yavgusishin celebrates his eighth victory at the renowned sumo tournament Kyushu 2025, taking place in Fukuoka, Japan.
On the ninth day of the competition, he faced off against the maegashira Hiradumi.
The match was competitive, but Danilo showcased his agility and secured the win.
Currently, he holds a record of 8-1, which places him in second place overall.
Yokozuna Onosato leads with a score of 9-0, while several rikishi have records of 7-2.
Tomorrow, November 18, the 21-year-old Aonishiki will face Tamawashi on the dohyo. The 41-year-old wrestler put up a commendable fight against Onosato yesterday but has a tournament record of 4-5.
The competition will continue until November 23. If multiple wrestlers share the same record, a playoff will be conducted.
Sumo wrestlers, even if not from Japan, choose names for their performances. Danilo adopted the ring name Aonishiki Arata, which translates to "Blue Brocade". This metaphor signifies a young yet brilliant talent or noble strength within a young body.
