A 27-year-old man in Odesa will face trial for systematically abusing his young children – a two-month-old daughter and a two-year-old son.
He inflicted various degrees of bodily harm on them, facing potential imprisonment.
This information comes from the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odesa region.
According to law enforcement, the incident occurred in October 2024. It was established that the father had been hitting his daughter every time she cried for two months, trying to "calm" her down.
When the child’s condition worsened, her 24-year-old mother called an ambulance. She admitted to being "afraid to intervene" in her husband's actions.
The girl was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Odesa Regional Children's Clinical Hospital with head and body injuries.
"The couple had not previously been on the radar of the police or child services. In addition to the daughter, they have a two-year-old son, whom, according to preliminary data, the father also abused. The boy is undergoing medical examinations, and it is preliminarily determined that he has a closed fracture of the femur," reported the police.
A forensic medical examination revealed that the children sustained injuries of varying severity. Specifically, the boy was diagnosed with a closed femur fracture, abrasions, and bruises, while his sister suffered multiple bruises, closed rib fractures, lung and brain contusions, which led to swelling and coma.
The children were removed from the family and are currently in a state-run child care facility.
The 27-year-old man from Odesa has been notified of suspicion under part 1 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (deliberate infliction of serious bodily harm to a child).
Investigators have also initiated another proceeding under part 1 of Article 122 of the Criminal Code for causing moderate bodily harm to the boy.
The suspect has been remanded in custody without the possibility of bail.
The indictment against him has been sent to court. He remains in custody, facing up to eight years in prison.
Additionally, law enforcement has opened a separate case against the mother under Article 166 of the Criminal Code (malicious failure to fulfill child care obligations). The article provides for imprisonment of up to five years.
