The documentary film by Ukrainian director Myroslav Chernov, "2000 Meters to Andriivka", has won a prestigious award at the CPH:DOX documentary film festival in Denmark.
It triumphed in the F:ACT AWARD category, according to the festival's official website.
"We are awarding the F:ACT prize to the film "2000 Meters to Andriivka" not only because this conflict is at our doorstep but also because it is a masterpiece of cinema: a chilling, multi-layered depiction of war that can be likened to the film "All Quiet on the Western Front"."
"But this is not World War I; this is today. The absurdity of war, as well as its unsettling poetry, is fully present here. An artist amid bloodshed brings reality home, creating an anti-war film that makes us reflect on the irreplaceability of every lost human life," – the jury stated.
The film documents events from September 2023 when soldiers of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade engaged in battles to liberate the village of Andriivka near Bakhmut. The filmmakers captured every step of the operation.
Chernov worked on the project with the FRONTLINE team and Associated Press for nearly a year and a half. The team involved in the film's creation included photographer Oleksandr Babenko, producers Michelle Mizner and Rainy Aronson-Rat.
The soundtrack for the film was composed by Grammy-winning composer and music producer Sam Slater ("Chernobyl", "Joker").
"This is a difficult time for Ukraine. It's a challenging moment for Ukrainian filmmakers. But right now, we are fighting for the truth, for survival, to ensure our stories are not forgotten. This recognition is further proof that we are being heard and seen."
"We do not know what awaits us tomorrow, but we know that as long as our voices are heard, we will remain alive," – wrote Myroslav Chernov after receiving the award.
A total of 71 films were presented at the festival across 6 different categories. The main prize, the DOX:AWARD, was awarded to the film Always by Deming Chen, chronicling a farming family's life.
It is worth noting that at the end of January, the independent American film festival Sundance showcased footage of the film "2000 Meters to Andriivka".
In 2024, the documentary film by Myroslav Chernov, Yevhen Malolietka, and Vasylysa Stepanenko, titled "20 Days in Mariupol", received several awards, including an Oscar, BAFTA, and the audience award at the Sundance festival.
