The Belgian development agency Enabel is implementing a project to purchase 35 generators with a total capacity of 4,000 kW for educational institutions in the capital of Ukraine. This was announced by Valentyn Mondryivskyi, the deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration.
«We are actively working to enhance the energy independence of critical infrastructure and social institutions in Kyiv. We are currently signing necessary agreements and preparing documentation. Our goal is to ensure the reliable operation of schools and kindergartens in comfortable conditions,» he noted.
According to the deputy, 35 educational institutions will receive new generators, including 25 schools, 9 kindergartens, and 1 vocational education institution. The total capacity of the equipment will be approximately 4,000 kW, which will allow for stable operations during power outages. The education departments have identified which institutions will receive the equipment as a priority.
This assistance is part of a large initiative by Enabel aimed at restoring critical infrastructure in Ukraine.
According to the Kyiv City Department of Education and Science, as of the beginning of the school year, 683 educational institutions in the city have generators with a total capacity of 6,274 kW: including 373 schools with 4,013 kW, 285 kindergartens with 1,630 kW, and 26 other institutions with 667 kW. This capacity is insufficient for fully functioning institutions.
To ensure a quality and effective educational process amid war and energy challenges, the city government is working on a comprehensive energy independence program for each institution individually. Within this program, plans include purchasing necessary generators and energy storage systems, as well as installing solar power stations based on the needs of schools and kindergartens. The implementation of this program will begin in 2025.
