In a recent debate between Canadian Liberal leader Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, the focus was on how Canada could assist Ukraine should the U.S. reduce its involvement.
Poilievre emphasized the need for continued support for Ukraine, stating that Canada should not merely follow the U.S. lead.
“We will stand firm and act independently when necessary to assist Ukraine through intelligence and arms supplies,” he remarked.
He also pointed out the importance of reducing Europe’s dependency on Russian energy, blaming the Liberal Party for blocking Canadian gas exports to Europe.
“I would quickly approve these projects to help break free from Putin’s grip and bolster Europe’s energy security,” added Poilievre.
Meanwhile, Carney asserted that Canada has always been a steadfast ally of Ukraine.
“We have welcomed Ukrainians into our homes and provided them with support,” the Prime Minister stated.
He reminded everyone of the crucial international coalition supporting Ukraine, especially when U.S. involvement wanes.
“Canada must remain open to trade with Ukraine, and this should not be a political bargaining chip,” Carney concluded.
The snap elections in Canada are scheduled for April 28, and international relations will be a key issue in the campaign.
