Friedrich Merz, the future Chancellor of Germany, believes that Europe's resolve may have influenced President Donald Trump's 90-day pause regarding "mirror tariffs".
This statement was reported by CNN, as conveyed by "European Truth".
On April 9, Trump announced a suspension of unprecedented tariffs for 90 days, without specifying which countries would be affected.
"In my opinion, this is a response to the determination of Europeans," Merz remarked.
He also quoted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen: "We are ready to respond."
Merz added that ideal transatlantic trade should operate on the principle of 0% tariffs.
Commenting on his decision, Trump stated that it was made "from the heart" and without legal consultations.
It is worth noting that on April 9, EU member states voted in favor of the European Commission's proposal to implement trade countermeasures against the United States.
According to sources, Hungary was the only EU country that did not support this decision.
