President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that joining the European Union is crucial not only for Ukraine's security but also for the entire European continent. He expressed this sentiment during a press conference on January 29, 2026.
"In my view, we have reached a common understanding with Europe that the EU represents security guarantees for both Ukraine and Europe as a whole. This is fundamental to our economic development and strategic choices. It’s not just a geopolitical matter, as the future of Europe could look very different. We cannot predict which countries will be part of this union. However, we do understand that economic stability is tied to the EU," - emphasized the President.
He noted that Ukraine will continue to trade with other regions but the EU remains the most significant market.
"This is our strategic choice that ensures our safety. Moreover, it reflects our shared values and geopolitical interests. The EU is not just an economic entity but also a vital component of security. How it functions is another question, but thankfully, there is currently no war within Europe," - added Zelensky.
Regarding the timeline for EU accession, he stated, "Technically, Ukraine will be ready by 2027.
"By the end of 2026, we will complete all necessary reforms. There are various aspects that require attention, and the process is lengthy. Compared to other countries aspiring to join the EU, we are in a more complex situation due to the ongoing war on our borders, which complicates our integration efforts," - he explained.
Zelensky also stressed that Russia will attempt to hinder Ukraine's EU aspirations, as it has done before.
"Russia does not want us to become part of the European community. They are interested in the Ukrainian market and our potential. They want Ukraine to remain outside both NATO and the EU. Therefore, we must prioritize this path to secure our future," - concluded the President.
On the topic of NATO, Zelensky remarked that he does not want to discuss it for years without yielding results.
"I do not want to be a president who only talks about NATO while failing to achieve Ukraine's membership due to external pressures. The U.S. does not always support this idea, while most European countries are on our side. However, if the U.S. opposes it, it could become a serious obstacle. Regarding the EU, I believe we have a chance," - he explained.
Zelensky also mentioned that reconstruction efforts for Ukraine will begin immediately after EU accession.
"This process will not be quick – it will take 5-10 years, but it is crucial to attract investments and funding. For investors, EU membership guarantees stability, which is essential for our recovery," - summarized the President.
The timeline for Ukraine's EU accession in 2027 has emerged amid discussions surrounding peace negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S. One of the key provisions in these negotiations is the potential for Ukraine's EU membership.
At the same time, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz categorically denied the possibility of Ukraine becoming an EU member on January 1, 2027.
