Despite all peaceful initiatives, the Kremlin continues its escalation by attacking Ukraine and harming civilians. Thus, Ukraine urgently needs assistance from its partners, specifically the delivery of 10 Patriot systems and interceptors for the existing air defense systems.
This was stated by Ukraine's Defense Minister Olexiy Shmyhal in London at the opening of the 30th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
«We still need an additional 10 Patriot systems, missiles for Patriot, SAMP/T, NASAMS, IRIS-T, and Hawk. This is urgent as Russia plans further strikes on our energy systems and infrastructure,» emphasized the head of Ukraine's military department.
He expressed gratitude to Germany for supplying two PAC-3 Patriot systems to Ukraine, as well as for all the assistance and support Ukraine receives from Germany and other international partners. He stressed that continued support is critical as the Kremlin dismisses any proposals for a ceasefire and continues to strike at civilians.
«While we consider peace negotiations and conditions for security guarantees, the Kremlin rejects any ceasefire proposals and continues escalation. Last Saturday, Russia killed a Ukrainian child and civilians during the largest combined attack against Ukraine. A new record was set - 810 drones, 13 ballistic and cruise missiles. Just a few hours ago, Putin struck the village of Yarova in the Donetsk region, targeting a group of pensioners collecting their pensions, resulting in over 20 deaths. Yesterday, Russia initiated winter terror by destroying the largest thermal power station in the Kyiv region, launching 49 drones against it. Our response must be justified and strong,» the Defense Minister stressed.
He noted that Ukraine needs a clear schedule for regular funding and arms supply, with $6 billion needed for drone and interceptor production to protect the economy and civilians, including FPV drones to hold the front line and apply pressure on military production and facilities in Russia.
Shmyhal stated that Ukraine will continue to fund its defense budget 100 percent, but it requires support and involvement from partners. The head of the military department noted that allocating $60 billion within the defense budgets of partner countries for 2026 would ensure reliable protection for Europe and Ukraine.
«Sanctions and the confiscation of frozen Russian assets must be intensified to reduce Russia's resources for this war. Only together can we win, and only together can we ensure peace in Europe,» Shmyhal concluded.
Reminder: Today, September 9, the 30th meeting of the international Ukraine Defense Contact Group was held in London, attended by representatives from about 50 countries.
