Sweden is contemplating joining efforts to ensure Ukraine's security, particularly in the areas of air and naval safety.
This was announced by Sweden's Defense Minister Paul Jonsson ahead of an informal meeting of EU defense ministers in Copenhagen.
“My Prime Minister has stated that if conditions are met, we will be able to contribute to both air and naval security,” the minister said.
He emphasized that a key factor is also the involvement of the United States in the coalition. According to him, partners, including Sweden, will engage in dialogue with Ukraine regarding its needs and expectations.
The minister highlighted that significant attention will be given to the “restoration of Ukraine's armed forces.”
Regarding the potential deployment of European forces in Ukraine, Jonsson noted: “If conditions are met, this is certainly something that could also be considered.” By “conditions,” he clarified that he meant either a ceasefire or the signing of a peace agreement, after which a consensus on troop placement could be reached.
“I believe this is a natural progression,” the Swedish Defense Minister added.
Speaking about the path to peace, he stated that essential components include bolstering support for Ukraine's armed forces and increasing sanctions and political pressure on Russia.
