Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held an important phone call, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations, peace initiatives between Ukraine and Russia, and current regional and global issues.
This information was shared by the Ukrainian president via Telegram.
«We discussed security matters in detail. Our national security advisors are currently working on each aspect, and we hope to have a comprehensive plan next week. President Erdogan involved his Minister of Defense to discuss how Turkey can assist in ensuring security, particularly in the Black Sea,» Zelensky noted.
He also mentioned exchanging views with the Turkish leader on recent developments and potential diplomatic steps.
«We are ready for leader-level discussions as it’s the most effective format. Unfortunately, Russia is not willing to engage and continues its aggression,» emphasized the Ukrainian president.
Zelensky reminded that last night, Russian forces again attacked Ukraine, launching over 30 missiles and around 600 drones. The bombardments resulted in 17 fatalities, including four children. Many individuals are in critical condition, and doctors are striving to save their lives.
«There were strikes on a Turkish enterprise, the Azerbaijani embassy, the EU representation, the British Council, and residential areas. This is Putin's response to the efforts of Ukraine, the USA, and our European partners to halt the violence. Therefore, we need pressure: sanctions, tariffs, and political pressure. We expect decisive actions,» Zelensky remarked.
The Turkish president’s communications directorate also reported about the phone call on social media X.
«President Erdogan stated that they are closely monitoring contacts in Alaska and Washington, that Turkey continues to work towards achieving lasting peace, and that the Republic of Turkey will continue to contribute to Ukraine's security after stability is restored,» the statement read.
The Turkish leader noted that «a fair resolution to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia is possible».
He added that «it is necessary to continue and intensify negotiations between the two sides» and emphasized Turkey's readiness «to do everything possible to facilitate high-level contacts that can pave the way for peace».
