On the eve of the official G7 summit opening in Canada, a lengthy informal conversation took place between several group leaders.

This was reported by Italian media, notably Sky TG24.

The meeting included Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The gathering, held at the resort where the summit is taking place, began with greetings and some jokes among the leaders, and according to media reports, it served as an opportunity for preliminary discussions ahead of the G7 proceedings.

In recent hours, Italian sources indicated a goal of seeking a unified stance with European partners concerning the conflict between Israel and Iran, in order to achieve overall coordination with US President Donald Trump.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that greater pressure needs to be exerted on Russia to ensure a ceasefire in Ukraine, calling on G7 countries to enhance sanctions to achieve this objective.

In light of the deadlock in diplomatic negotiations, the European Union intends to adopt a new sanctions package against Russia, but so far has been unable to convince Trump, who does not wish to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin, to impose new US sanctions. Trump has expressed that he does not want sanctions to obstruct the path to a ceasefire.

As previously reported by "European Truth", on June 10, the European Commission presented the 18th sanctions package against Russia.
