Details: When asked about the conflict between Russia and the efforts of the Trump administration to resolve it, he mentioned that there were times he was close to stepping back from the mediation role.

"There were moments when I (was – ed.) close to that, but honestly, positive developments occurred", – Trump explained why he still continues his "peace efforts".

At the same time, he confirmed that he could still choose to stop them.

"Well, there will come a time when I say: "Okay, go ahead. Keep being foolish and keep fighting", – Trump stated.

He admitted that achieving an agreement between the two warring nations might be unrealistic, although he believes that a deal could be "quite close".

Direct quote: "It might be unachievable… Just so you understand, Kristen, between these two men (Zelensky and Putin. – ed.), and frankly, between some soldiers, there is immense hatred. Among the generals. They have been fighting fiercely for three years. I think we have a very good chance of achieving this".

Background: On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington would withdraw from its "mediating role" between Russia and Ukraine if there is no progress in achieving peace between them.

The US State Department indicated that the States would "change their approach" to efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine and plan to take a less active role.
