In 2025, six children lost their lives in Ukraine due to hazardous activities on the railway, with another eight sustaining injuries.
This information was shared by Vitaliy Romanov, Deputy Head of the Juvenile Police of Ukraine, during an interview on "Suspilne".
Thrill-seeking, or what is known as "zachepinh", involves teenagers climbing onto train cars to capture videos or photos. Another variant of this dangerous pastime is hanging onto the outside of moving trains.
"The consequences of such activities can be severe, often leading to fatalities. We constantly emphasize the need to prevent these situations," said Vitaliy Romanov.
He recounted two unfortunate incidents that occurred in Volyn on the same day, April 20. One incident involved a 16-year-old boy who climbed onto a train car.
A few hours later, a 13-year-old boy attempted to film a video from the rooftop of a train car and climbed up using a ladder. He suffered an electric shock.
"In this case, the child sustained 80% burns to his body, and his condition is very critical; doctors are fighting for his life," noted Vitaliy Romanov.
He also added that "zachepinh" is a phenomenon not limited to Ukraine but is also seen in other countries. Often, the injured are children from well-to-do families who have not previously come under the radar of law enforcement.
It’s worth mentioning that on March 12 in Kyiv, a 12-year-old boy climbed onto a train car and suffered severe burns from an electric shock. Doctors fought for his life for five days, but unfortunately, the teenager passed away.
