Every day in Ukraine, approximately 240 fires are recorded, resulting in the deaths of around four individuals, with an additional five injured.

This was reported by Roman Tsyren, head of the Emergency Situations Prevention Department of the State Emergency Service, during a briefing at the "Media Center Ukraine".

According to Tsyren, these figures indicate a "worrying trend".

"On average, two thousand citizens die from fires each year, and five thousand may suffer injuries," emphasized the SES representative.

The SES also urged Ukrainians to refrain from lighting fires in natural areas during the Easter celebrations.

"Our country's territory has been severely affected by explosive devices. Many areas have been de-occupied, and dangerous items are still found there.

Especially if forests and parks are being used, I do not recommend lighting bonfires, as this year has seen a significant increase in fires in ecosystems. Fires in ecosystems have increased by 68% this year," explained Roman Tsyren.

Losses from emergency situations also include deaths and injuries resulting from traffic accidents, stated Roman Tsyren.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in 2024, nearly 26,000 accidents occurred with casualties. Over 3,200 people died and more than 32,000 were injured. This is a 5-9% increase compared to 2023.

As reported by Oleksiy Biloshytskyi, the first deputy head of the Patrol Police Department, the most common cause of traffic accidents with casualties and fatalities is speeding, which accounts for almost 39.4%.

Common causes of accidents also include violations of maneuvering rules, crossing intersections and pedestrian crossings, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.

"If we add the traffic accidents that claim six thousand of our citizens’ lives, these are colossal losses that we bear," summarized the head of the Emergency Situations Prevention Department.

It is worth noting that only 55 Ukrainians died as a result of domestic fires in the first six days of 2025. Fires were caused by electrical short circuits, failure to follow heating appliance usage rules, and careless handling of fire, including smoking in bed while intoxicated.
