The Ukrainian government has approved a new mechanism for managing the registry of genetically modified organisms, aimed at improving consumer safety.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

The new registry will serve as the primary information system, allowing for the tracking, monitoring, and storage of data on all registered GMOs in Ukraine.

The ministry explained that implementing such a registry is a crucial step towards ensuring transparency in the biotechnology sector, enhancing consumer safety, and adhering to Ukraine's international commitments.

Additionally, the regulation aligns Ukrainian legislation with European Union laws concerning GMOs, particularly Directive 2001/18/EC and Commission Decision 2004/204/EC on the operation of registries for GMO information.

This initiative will enable the establishment of a GMO accounting and control system in Ukraine that meets European standards, minimizing risks to human health and the environment.

The regulation will take effect in September 2026, coinciding with new legislation governing genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
