The European Union has decided to supply Ukraine with a new batch of emergency generators from its strategic reserves in response to ongoing Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. According to the European Commission's press service,
«Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are without electricity, water, and heating in freezing temperatures due to relentless Russian strikes on energy facilities. Today, the European Commission is deploying 447 emergency generators worth 3.7 million euros from the EU's strategic reserves to restore electricity supply to hospitals, shelters, and essential services», the statement reads.
The generators, mobilized from rescEU strategic reserves and stored in Poland, will be distributed by the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ukrainian Red Cross among the most affected communities.
The European Commission also reminded that since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion, the EU has sent about 10,000 generators to Ukraine through the Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM). Before this winter, the Commission completed the transfer of a full thermal power plant donated by Lithuania as part of the largest coordinated logistical operation in the history of the Mechanism.
«The European Commission firmly condemns Russia's attacks on critical energy infrastructure and the humanitarian damage they cause. The EU will not allow Russia to freeze Ukraine into submission and will continue to help Ukrainians through this winter», the statement emphasizes.
The First Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, stated that Ukraine has received over 50 tons of equipment for energy needs in recent days.
