In the 2025/2026 academic year, Estonia will launch a pilot course titled «Drone Operation», collaboratively developed by the Department of Defense Resources and the Estonian Aviation Academy.
This is the first systematic approach to teaching modern drone technologies in the country's high schools.
The course aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge about unmanned aerial vehicles and the rules for their safe operation. Young people will gain not only theoretical knowledge but also practical experience in drone management.
The training will last for 35 academic hours, consisting of an online theoretical component and practical sessions. The theoretical part covers the history of drones, regulations, safety issues, flight planning, meteorology, and basic aircraft construction. The practical segment will include managing FPV drones, working with simulators, and conducting flights in accordance with safety requirements.
The pilot program will be implemented in 12 schools across Estonia.
According to ERR, a drone management course began in October in Estonia, with around 3,000 participants signing up within the first month. Additionally, 120 individuals have already completed the training. The program was developed by the tech organization HK Unicorn Squad, while the Estonian Defence League will conduct the training. Unicorn Squad is responsible for the methodology and educational materials, while Defence League instructors will carry out the practical training.
The course fee is 100 euros, which will be used to compensate the Defence League instructors.
