The Estonian Defense Forces have initiated a large-scale operation aimed at enhancing the nation's capability to quickly respond to potential air threats. According to ERR, the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces stated that the operation is conducted under the leadership of the Air Force (VPS) and is a continuation of the September exercises focused on responding to airspace violations.
The defense ministry added that the direct military threat to Estonia remains low, but regional security has worsened due to Russia's war against Ukraine.
"The impact of Russian aggression is felt throughout Europe. Although violations of airspace by drones are rare, we must be prepared to respond immediately," said the commander of the Estonian Air Force Brigadier General Riivo Valge.
He stated that the current operation will allow for quicker mitigation of potential risks associated with unidentified flying objects.
"It is impossible to completely eliminate the threat, but we are obligated to do everything possible to minimize it," he added.
It is noted that as part of the operation, the defense forces are strengthening the protection of military facilities and creating conditions for the rapid relocation of air surveillance and air defense units beyond military garrisons.
Partial flight restrictions in Estonia's airspace are expected.
