Syrian intelligence has thwarted two assassination attempts on President Ahmad al-Sharaa. According to Reuters, these attempts occurred over the past few months.
Sources indicate that the threat to the president's life is increasing as he strives to consolidate power in a nation torn apart by 14 years of civil war.
One of the attempts, linked to the «Islamic State», was associated with a public event attended by the president. Other details have not been disclosed due to the sensitivity of the matter.
The Syrian Ministry of Information also declined to comment on the assassination attempts, noting that in the last 10 months, intelligence services have prevented several ISIS attacks, including at religious sites. “Syria is committed to protecting its people and continues to fight terrorism in all its forms,” the ministry stated.
It is worth recalling that on November 10, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa at the White House, marking the first visit of a Syrian head of state to Washington since the country gained independence in 1946.
