Today, the Philippines faced the impact of Typhoon Kalmaegi, which brought torrential rains and strong winds, leading to at least four fatalities. This information was reported by DW citing local authorities.
The typhoon made landfall around midnight in the eastern province of Southern Leyte and affected Cebu, where residents had yet to recover from a severe earthquake that occurred in October.
Yesterday, wind speeds reached up to 140 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 195 km/h.
Today, a military helicopter sent for disaster response crashed in northern Mindanao.
Kalmaegi is expected to move through the Visayas region and exit into the South China Sea by Wednesday. The Vietnamese government stated it is preparing for the worst-case scenario related to the typhoon.
The Philippine Red Cross reported that people are trapped on the roofs of their homes. In the city of Mandaue, the water has reached head level.
Scientists link the intensification of climate change to rising ocean temperatures and the strengthening of storms as well as other extreme weather events.
